King Salmon, South Naknek, and Naknek each have Volunteer Fire Battalions with apparatus appropriate for fire fighting needs.

Each Volunteer Fire Squad is headed by a Battalion Chief. Training is usually combined to include interested volunteers from each of the three locations.

Each community stores and performs minor maintenance on its own equipment in heated "Fire Station" type facility. In King Salmon, the majority of the borough's fire fighting apparatus is stored "on base" in the Air Force's Fire Station, rather than in a separate building. South Naknek uses a portion of its fire station for an emergency medical services clinic.

Patients can be transported to the Borough's Camai Medical Center, in Naknek, if more in-depth care is required.Gordon Preston, photo by Anton Littau

Three volunteer emergency medical squads staff three ambulances, one for each community. The ambulance squads at this time provide Basic Life Support Services. There are approximately 20 year-round EMS volunteers. In the summer months, the peak call-out season, our local volunteers are augmented by a hired staff of six to eight EMT's.

The Emergency Medical Services and Fire Department are headed by one paid Chief/EMS Coordinator and operate under a combined budget. Volunteers receive stipends for call-outs, medi-vacs, and training sessions required to maintain certification. In addition up to eight EMS volunteers are encouraged to attend the annual Southern Region EMS Symposium, while a similar number of Fire Service Volunteers are encouraged to attend an annual fire training symposium, in state.

The Bristol Bay Borough Police - The Police Department's primary mission is to enforce state laws and borough ordinances, uphold the peace and keep our community a safe place to live. The department dispatches police, EMT's, firefighters, and state troopers, in addition to caring for prisoners in the detention facility.

The Police Department currently has nine employees: Chief Jerry Castleberry, three officers, four dispatchers and a dispatch supervisor. The department is located on the Air Force Base in King Salmon, Alaska.

The police department's secondary mission is to assist police officers, state troopers, state court system personnel, the district attorney and other attorneys with administrative, secretarial and clerical responsibilities. The department also offers full time motor vehicle services, providing the public with the convenience of a local D.M.V. office.

The police department conducts all search and rescue missions within the Bristol Bay Borough area.

The e-mail address for the Police Department is: police@theborough.com
